Just in time for Dry Eye Awareness Month. . . The Journal Impact Factors for 2018 have just been released. These Impact Factors are based upon citations in 2018 to journal articles published in 2016 and 2017.

“The data are amazing!,” stated Victor Perez Quinones, MD, a Professor of Opthalmology at Duke Eye Center. The Impact Factor of The Ocular Surface (TOS) has leapt from 5.5 to 9.108, making TOS the second highest ranked eye journal in the world. Further, if the only journals ranked and considered are those that publish original articles and reviews, then TOS would be number one.

This tremendous increase in Impact Factor is due primarily to the twelve TFOS DEWS II reports, which were published in TOS in 2017. Breaking down the ranking statistics, the five most highly cited TOS articles in 2017 were all from TFOS DEWS II and accounted for more than half of all TOS citations in 2017. Further, ten of the top twelve cited TOS articles in 2017 originated from TFOS DEWS II. Given that the TFOS DEWS II reports will continue to be cited in 2018, it is quite likely that the 2019 TOS Impact Factor will increase more.

Ali Djalilian, MD, the editor-in-chief of TOS commented, “We are very pleased to see the high impact of the work that is published in TOS, led by the impressive TFOS DEWS II reports as well as the other excellent publications from around the world. This highlights the core mission of the journal which is to serve as the leading source of authoritative and cutting edge information in the field of ocular surface both through reviews and original research.”

Thanks to all TFOS DEWS II participants from around the world - your efforts have clearly had an outstanding impact. Thanks also to TOS for agreeing to publish the TFOS DEWS II reports! Here’s to continuing a TFOS-TOS relationship that began, once upon a time, at the 2003 launch of TOS as a journal.

Journal Impact Factors, as well as the listed journal citations and associated Impact Factor calculations, may be found in the InCites Journal Citation Reports of Clarivate Analytics.
